Mayhew / Employment Opportunities / Summer Staff Positions

Summer Staff Positions

We consider each staff member a "Program Facilitator." As you've probably already figured out, Mayhew is not your average summer camp, so the people we hire are not looking to be your average camp counselors. We will need staff who are willing to facilitate:

Art / Athletics / Hiking / Adventure / Rowing / Swimming / Cabin Counselor

Art (one or two people)

Mayhew's Art program only just began in 2005. We have a good space and plenty of supplies, and are looking for someone who can really take ownership of this fledgling endeavor. Responsibilities include coming up with and implementing creative activities for the boys, as well as finding more and more ways to integrate their artwork into island life.

Athletics (usually one or two people)

Athletics facilitators will help direct coaches, serve as referees/umpires, and teach basic athletic skills in softball, basketball, floor hockey, and soccer. Sportsmanship and team play are heavily emphasized. Athletics should be a fun and positive part of the program and should dispel, rather than enforce, the antipathy many of our boys feel for organized sports.

Hiking (one person)

Day hikes taken throughout the session require a capable staff leader with considerable outdoors experience and excellent physical condition. Must be 21 and have a good driving record to drive Mayhew vehicles to off-island trails.

Adventure (two people)

Facilitates all challenge-course activities including group initiatives and high-element climbing events. Requires prior facilitation experience and technical expertise with both low-rope and high-rope activities. Adventure on the Island emphasizes group cooperation, group problem solving, and group trust.

Rowing (one person)

Our competitive rowing program is an excellent team activity for the boys, and a strong staff member is needed to facilitate the practices and events. The boats are seven-man Whitehall fiberglass rowing boats. Rowing expertise is not as important as communication skills, teaching ability, enthusiasm, and common sense.

Swimming (two people)

Requires Water Safety Instructor certificate (or willingness to acquire one before the start of the Mayhew summer), along with strong swimming skills, good communication skills, patience, and common sense. Responsible for instructing the boys in Red Cross-certified swimming at all levels.

Cabin Counselor

In addition to the above positions, there will be one "Cabin Counselor" in each of the six cabins who will be responsible for getting the boys through the daily routine. This role is restricted to our male staff. The best analogy for this job is that of the stay-at-home parent. Usually, two staff will be attached to each cabin, with one staff member leaving the group during the day to facilitate an activity (athletics, swimming, etc.), and the Cabin Counselor staying with the boys to lead them from activity to activity. Together, the group will form an identity (with a name and unique spirit), and face all of the Island's challenges as a unit.
